MWC is the most important phone event in the calendar. At MWC 2014 we met the Samsung Galaxy S5 and Sony Xperia Z2 and the super secure Blackphone. So what can we expect from 2015?
MWC 2015: dates and location
MWC 2015 will take place from the 2nd of March to the 5th of March 2015, and once again it’ll be at Fira Gran Via in Barcelona, Spain. There’s a second venue, Fira Montjuïc, just down the road for “selected events”.
MWC 2015: what to expect from Sony
Sony’s a regular exhibitor at MWC and likes to introduce new models there, so there’s a very good chance we’ll see the Xperia Z4 in March - not least because Sony’s new Exmor RS IMX230 image sensor will start shipping the following month. The successor to the Xperia Z3 is expected to have a 5.5-inch QHD display, a 2.8 GHz, eight core Snapdragon 810 processor and 4 GB of RAM.
- MWC 2015: what to expect from HTC
With many experts calling the HTC One M8 the world’s best smartphone, you’ll never guess what HTC is expected to unveil at MWC 2015: that’s right, the HTC One M9 and possibly the HTC One M9 Prime too. Once again we’re hearing QHD screens and Snapdragon 810s, and we’re also hearing mumblings of an “exotic material” made by combining aluminum and silicone.
- MWC 2015: what to expect from Samsung
Samsung Galaxy S6, anyone? The device, codenamed “Project Zero”, promises to be a brave new direction for Sammy’s flagship: unlike previous versions, which have stuck closely to the familiar Galaxy S design, the S6 will boast a completely different form. What kind of form is currently unclear, although rumours suggest that there will be a 5.2-inch QHD Super AMOLED on the front and an end to the less than premium plastic cases that make the S series look a little cheap.
- Expect Samsung to try and upstage MWC slightly by holding its own Samsung Unpacked event in the days prior to the main show.
The S6 is a really important release for Samsung, whose key phablet market is under assault from stacks of rivals including Apple. It’s Samsung’s chance to show that it’s more than a mere copyist in a market where its sales have declined over 60% this year. We can’t wait to see what it comes up with.
MWC 2015: what to expect from LG
The LG G3 is just months old, but we’re expecting to see at least a hint of the LG G4 at MWC - although we’ll be surprised if the actual device ships before the summer.
- MWC 2015: what to expect from Huawei
Huawei's Ascend P7 turned up in May, but increasingly leaky suppliers suggest that its successor, the Ascend P8, might be ready to say hello at MWC. For a bit of variety it’s expected to have a QHD screen and may be powered by the Kirin 930 eight-core processor - although that does seem unlikely as that particular chipset isn’t expected until late 2015.
What about you? What would you like to see at MWC 2015?
